Chatuchak is not one market. It is eight or nine markets sharing a roof, and if you walk in without a plan you will spend six hours, buy three things and leave with heatstroke.

The sections that matter

SectionsWhat's there
2–6Vintage and secondhand clothing. The main event. Runs from cheap resale rails into genuinely curated stock
22–26The denser, older end. Where the dealers who supply the Thonglor shops buy
1 and 26Antiques, ceramics, collectibles, ephemera
3, 4, 7, 8Furniture and home
7, 8Ceramics and home décor

Everything else is plants, pets, food, souvenirs and new clothing. It is 80% of the market and 0% of your reason for being there.

Section numbers are painted on the walkway posts, not on the stalls. Learn to look up.

When to go

Saturday 06:00–09:00 for first pick. Serious buyers are there at six and the good stock moves before the tourists arrive.

Saturday or Sunday after 16:00 for discounts. Vendors would rather sell at a loss than carry stock home, and the last ninety minutes is where the bargaining actually works.

Friday 18:00–24:00 is the night and wholesale session. Much quieter, more trade-oriented, and a genuinely different market from the weekend one.

Wednesday and Thursday daytime is the plant and fish market only. Do not make that trip.

Getting in

MRT Kamphaeng Phet Exit 2 puts you directly into the clothing sections. This matters — the BTS at Mo Chit drops you at the wrong end and adds fifteen minutes of walking through the parts you do not want.

What things cost

  • Graphic and band tees: ฿200–800
  • Vintage denim and Levi's: ฿300–2,000
  • Sportswear: ฿200–1,000
  • Reworked and upcycled denim: higher, and worth it
  • Antiques and collectibles: anything

Haggling is expected above about ฿500 and not below it. Do not grind a vendor over ฿50 — it reads badly and the same vendor will remember you next time.

Named stalls worth finding

  • D.I.Y. by Panida, Section 3 — reworked and upcycled Levi's
  • Apisitique Vintage, Section 3 Soi 42/1 — 1970s–90s jewellery and accessories
  • His & Her Vintage, Section 4 Soi 1 — 1960s hats, sunglasses and jewellery, also sold internationally through Etsy

The route that works

Enter at Kamphaeng Phet Exit 2. Work Sections 2 through 6 systematically, aisle by aisle, without doubling back. Break for food and water. Then do 22 through 26. If you still have energy, finish in 1 and 26 for antiques.

Three hours if you are efficient. Five if you are enjoying yourself.

Practicalities

Bring cash in small notes — most stalls have a PromptPay QR you cannot use. Bring water; the covered aisles hit 40°C. Bring a bag you can carry loaded, because you are not getting a taxi from inside the market.

And accept that you will get lost. Everyone does. The market is designed as a grid and does not behave like one.

When Chatuchak beats you

Walk ten minutes to Bang Sue Junction — six air-conditioned floors of the same trade, floors 3 and 4 for clothing. It is the single best decision available to you at two in the afternoon in April.
