Half the markets in this guide open four days a week or fewer. Getting the calendar wrong is the most common way to waste a trip.

Which months

November to February is high season: cool, dry, and when Bangkok is most pleasant to walk for eight hours a day. It is also when prices and hotels are highest.

March to May is hot. Chatuchak in April is genuinely punishing — 40°C under the covered aisles. If you travel then, work the air-conditioned buildings (Bang Sue Junction, Mega Plaza, the reuse chains) and the night markets, and treat the open-air markets as an early-morning activity only.

June to October is the wet season. Rain is heavy and short rather than constant, which matters less than people expect, and it is the cheapest time to travel. The night markets are the ones affected.

Build around the fairs

Made By Legacy runs several times a year at rotating venues, around 250 vendors and 15,000 attendees, with a two-year vendor waiting list. Recent editions have been in January, June and July. A trip timed to one is worth roughly twice a trip that is not.

Jing Jai Vintage Market in Chiang Mai runs the first Friday of every month, 17:00–21:00 — much easier to plan around, and a genuine reason to be in Chiang Mai at the start of a month.

A sensible trip shape

Fly in on a Wednesday or Thursday. Thursday and Friday for the shops, the warehouses and Talad Rot Fai. Saturday and Sunday for Chatuchak and the weekend markets. Monday for Chiang Mai or Rong Kluea. That gets you the full weekly cycle in five days.

If you can only come for a weekend: Saturday Chatuchak, Sunday kilo shops and Rot Fai. You will miss the warehouses, which is where the money is, so try not to only come for a weekend.
