The freight decision is the one most first-time buyers get wrong, and it is usually the difference between a profitable trip and a break-even one.
The rate curve
Air freight rates collapse as volume rises. These are consolidated air freight rates, updated July 2026:
| Route | 10 kg | 100 kg | 300 kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand → USA | $107.41/kg | $15.55/kg | $9.11/kg |
| Thailand → UK | $47.97/kg | $9.29/kg | $5.74/kg |
Read that curve carefully, because it defines your trip. Below about 50 kg, shipping is so expensive per kilo that you should be flying it home as checked baggage. Above 100 kg the economics work. Between the two is the worst place to be.
Express couriers
From the 2024 Thai rate card:
| Carrier | 30 kg to USA | 30 kg to UK | 30 kg to Australia |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | ฿19,195 | ฿24,341 | ฿16,869 |
Above 30 kg, DHL charges ฿629/kg to the US, ฿720/kg to the UK and ฿496/kg to Australia, plus fuel surcharge. That is roughly $20/kg — almost never worth it for clothing, occasionally worth it for high-value single pieces where speed and tracking matter.
Thailand Post
- EMS World: around ฿1,700 for 0.5 kg to the US. Maximum 30 kg for an international parcel.
- Logispost World handles 20–200 kg, maximum dimensions 150 × 200 × 150 cm.
- Registered / ePacket: ฿765 (14–20 days) or ฿720 (7–14 days) for 0.5 kg Bangkok to New York — the cheapest small-parcel route by a distance.
Postal shipments need a CN22 customs declaration.
Sea freight
Sea is roughly five to six times cheaper than air and takes 43–56 days port to port to the US.
- 20 ft container, Bangkok to New York: around US$5,800–7,750
- 40 ft: around US$6,600–8,850
- Insurance adds $100–200
LCL — less than container load — is consolidator-specific and there is no public price index. Quotes vary enormously and the weight-or-measure rule usually applies at 1 CBM = 1 tonne, with CFS and documentation fees on top. Get three quotes.
For furniture out of Chiang Mai, Ban Tawai showrooms quote US$1,800–2,400 for a 20 ft container to Europe or North America and US$2,800–3,500 for a 40 ft, door to door in four to eight weeks. That is a materially better rate than the general-freight numbers above, because they ship containers constantly.
Things that cannot go by air
Relevant if you are buying vintage audio or cameras: speakers, amplifiers and anything with magnets are treated as dangerous goods, and batteries must be removed from electronics before shipping. Plan for sea, or plan to carry it.
The decision framework
- Under 30 kg — checked baggage. Two 23 kg bags on a long-haul ticket is 46 kg of freight for the cost of an excess-bag fee, and it is almost always the cheapest option available to you.
- 30–100 kg — awkward. Either split across postal consignments, or accept the poor per-kilo rate, or buy more.
- 100–300 kg — consolidated air freight. This is the sweet spot for a serious buying trip.
- 300 kg+ or hard goods — sea. Start the conversation with a forwarder before you leave home, not after you have bought.
Before you ship anything
Photograph everything. For US-bound shipments especially, the condition of the goods is part of the customs argument, not an afterthought — see the HTS 6309 guide. Keep the commercial invoice detailed and honest, keep the packing list in bulk format if you are claiming 6309, and get a fumigation certificate if your forwarder asks for one.
The worst outcome in this business is not paying too much for freight. It is having a consignment reclassified at the border and paying 32% duty on goods you bought at a 12% margin.
